Plant Dietas: A Path Back to Connection
Where This Path Began
Ever since a young age, I felt a deep longing for contact with something I believed existed, but that I had no access to — some deeper connection to the world surrounding me, one I could not necessarily experience myself in the way I was longing to.
I first got to know plants either as decorative beauty, or as allopathic medicines used to ease physical ailments — treating un-wellness on a purely symptomatic basis rather than a holistic one. At a certain point in my life, particular plants began calling me. I had very little information about plants and their ancient wisdom, and I certainly didn't see them as ancient technologies I could access, learn from, and be transformed by.
Slowly, I learned the history behind different plants: their cosmology, their stories, their energies. And a new language began to emerge: how to listen to them not only with the mind, but with my whole being. I became a student of these plants and their almost infinite ways of teaching. Through a number of trainings and Initiations, I slowly began working with them, and they showed me what it feels like when nothing is separate: when everything is connected.
I couldn't explain, from a rational lens, how this path unfolded for me. But what I could feel was that I was ready to expand my vision beyond human interaction alone, toward the wider web of Nature.
As the Zen saying goes: "When the student is ready, the teacher appears."
Plants are sentient and conscious. They simply express themselves in a different way than humans do. What I learned on my path of becoming a Dieta Guide is that we live in a symbiotic relationship with the entire plant king- and queendom. Plants give us everything we need for our existence, and they help us move from surviving to thriving. They give us air, food, medicine, joy — and, from a deeper perspective, wisdom.
When we approach them from respectful ground, and become more sensitive and in tune, we can fully experience and embody their medicine.
We build a new relationship - a friendship, a partnership - and some plants even become allies for life.
My deepest experiences in plant dietas have carried a profound sense of life force and connection to Source - the “All- That- Is”, the Divine - and becoming a bridge, carrying information from the non-physical realm into daily human life.
"…..but he who is not true himself will not see the truth as it is taught by Nature, and it is far easier to study a number of books and to learn by heart a number of scientific theories than to ennoble one's own character to such an extent as to enter into perfect harmony with Nature and to be able to see the truth."
Paracelsus, 16th-century Swiss physician and alchemist
What Is a Dieta?
A Dieta is a sacred process of learning directly from a plant. Unlike knowledge gained through books or intellectual study, a Dieta is deeply embodied and experiential. In the tradition I have apprenticed with, the plant itself becomes the teacher: a living medium that opens us to a space of light and awareness, through which we learn, heal and envision.
Each plant carries its own healing qualities and teachings, offering insight into particular aspects of our physical, emotional, and spiritual lives. Every plant has the capacity to heal specific conditions and to reveal its own unique expression of light. Yet ultimately, all plants point toward the same fundamental truth:
that which we already are, but have forgotten.
They teach us about nature and natural law, about ourselves and our place in the world, and they open us to realities beyond the visible. Above all, they guide us toward harmony, inner peace, and a way of living aligned with Truth, Wisdom and with Knowledge — not intellectual knowledge, but knowledge born of direct experience.
What a Dieta Involves
There are two forms of dieting a plant (or a mushroom): A Dieta can involves a period of intentional isolation, lasting anywhere from a few days to several months. And the “social Dieta”, in which you stay at home or in a dedicated space, and go on with your daily life, while being in the portal of the Dieta.
In my tradition, the process generally unfolds in cycles of seven-day to three week dietas, adjusted according to the needs and condition of each participant.
Food is kept light, usually juices or simple soups. Each morning and evening, the plant medicine is taken. The Guide opens the portal, checks on the connection between the plant and the human, and eventually closes the Dieta with sacred song and prayer.
These medicines also tend to awaken the realm of dreams, which frequently reveals insight into the cleansing and healing taking place. While the Guide remains available for guidance and questions, the person who diets stays in deep encounter with one's own thoughts, mind, and inner being. In this space, repetitive patterns, limiting beliefs, fears, and inner obstacles are brought into awareness and, over time, released.
On a physical level, a Dieta is often deeply cleansing - purifying the blood, stomach, and intestines, where illness and stagnation often accumulate. On the level of the mind and emotions, it helps dissolve entrenched thought patterns and belief systems that limit our growth.
Some people begin with just one Dieta, and find it so transformative that they feel called to continue through the whole process over and over again ( like myself…)
Along the way, I've seen participants discover entirely new ways of perceiving reality and relating to life. What they gain often finds its way naturally back into the work they already do - as psychologists, counselors, teachers, massage therapists, energy workers, healers, coaches, entrepreneurs, mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, artists, seekers, dreamers, Earth-lovers, and so many other paths. A dieta isn't here to redirect anyone's path. It's here to deepen whatever path already calls to them.
An Invitation
Reading about a Dieta is one thing. Sitting with a plant, in silence, and letting it teach you directly is another.
If something in this piece resonates and you feel called to experience a plant Dieta yourself, I'd love to hear from you.
